Plan illustration

Curious how the numbers come together?

This little app lays a plan out one year at a time: what is paid, when the paying stops, and what the illustration shows coming back. Pick an example, move a slider, and watch the shape of the plan change.

Before you start

What you are looking at, in plain words.

The plan has two parts that sit side by side. Life insurance looks after protection, so the family is covered. Mutual funds look after growth, money left to work over the long run. The illustration puts both on one timeline so you can see how they meet.

It is

A year-by-year picture

One line for each year, from year 0 to year 50. The left figure is what is paid that year; the right figure is what the illustration shows coming in.

It is not

A quote or a promise

It is not a premium quote, a guaranteed return or a contract. Real figures depend on the policy terms and on the funds, and mutual funds are subject to market risk.

Where it comes from

Real worked examples

The figures follow worked examples prepared around ages 30 and 32. Move away from those ages and the sheet blends the examples to show how the plan changes shape.

Two ways to pay

Small, or short

A premium can be kept very small, or paid over a short period and then stop. In this illustration the payments run for 12 years, and after that nothing more is due.

Pick a worked example

Hari is a person from a real worked example: 30 years old, with 20 lakh cover and one lump sum later.

Change it and explore

Only labels the sheet. It does not change any figure.

30

In this illustration, starting older raises the premium for the same cover. The closest matches to the worked examples are 30 and 32.

20
10 L100 L

The life cover: the amount the policy is built around. 20 lakh means ₹20,00,000. Slide it, or type an exact figure.

How the money comes back

Take it all at once in year 35, or spread it as a yearly income from year 35 onwards.
